The talk will examine the words spoken by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, in 1804. His speech forewarned the nation-state of the measures, precautions, and the responsibilities that were necessary to maintain freedom. We will decipher Dessalines’ precepts within the context of Haiti’s national and leadership history. May 18th, 2024, marks 220 years since the creation of the Haitian Flag, the symbol of a nation that emerged from three centuries of the chattel slavery system. Lamentably, 2024 exposes a chronic crisis that has been in the making for over 200 years and has reached the level of destructive mayhem. What have been the compounded factors?
