This class is presented in Spanish.

We invite you to Welcome Workshops, a series of workshops designed to welcome Spanish-speaking people who have moved to Central Florida. This series of workshops covers important topics described in detail below:

Life in Central Florida

In the "Life in Central Florida" workshop we will share valuable information and resources related to housing costs, transportation options, employment outlook, educational opportunities, and access to health care.

The American Way

In the "The American Way" workshop, we will provide practical information so that Hispanic adults have a better understanding of the US work environment in order to collaborate effectively with non-Latino employers and co-workers. We will discuss the differences between American and Hispanic cultures, how to identify and handle a culture shock, and personal image, among other topics.

In addition, resources and information will be provided to help Hispanic professionals and workers become more successful in their careers. We put people in contact with professionals who will help them update their resume, cover letter, do job searches and have more effective interviews. In addition, we will share information on validation of licenses, certifications and university credits, courses to improve English, and how to start a business.

 About the “Talleres de Bienvenida”

Since 2014, Talleres de Bienvenida or “Welcome Workshops” effectively inform new Spanish-dominant residents about important aspects of relocating and living in Central Florida to ensure each person is equipped with the necessary knowledge to better adapt to life in this region. They are delivered in Spanish during a full-day of FREE community workshops, and cover housing, employment, education, healthcare, transportation and cultural competency in the workplace. As of 2016, Puerto Ricans alone made up more than 400,000 (over half) of the Hispanic population in Central Florida. In the aftermath of Hurricane María, the massive and rapid migration from Puerto Rico has reached new heights with the arrival of approximately 200,000 newcomers as reported by government agencies. We must take the necessary steps to ensure that the transition to their new home and culture is effective, and that the improved conditions they seek are maintained for them and all Floridians. Only then, will they feel connected to their community and get involved in civil engagement, including assuming leadership roles in their neighborhoods.

The overarching goal of the Talleres de Bienvenida is to help the Puerto Rican and Latino community experience a smoother transition into Central Florida, and integration into the American workforce and mindset without abandoning their cultural values. As a result, we help:

1. Alleviate uncertainty and stress caused by the transition

2. Reduce barriers to employment

3. Increase job retention and employer satisfaction

4. Promote economic stability and prosperity in our community

5. Raise cultural awareness and competency

6. Foster civic engagement and participation

About the branch

LYNX Bus Link 104 East Colonial

The Alafaya Branch has a long history of providing library services to the East Orange County community. The branch originally opened in 1965 as the Azalea Park branch, situated on Lake Barton Road. From the 1970s through the 1990s the branch provided library services from shopping center locations. Ground was broken in January 1999 for a new branch, designed to be the prototype branch for future Orange County Library System branches. Opened on February 1, 2000, the Alafaya branch was funded by a Florida Library Construction Grant.
