Dogs have shaped the history of writing from the very beginning, ever since one left its paw prints on early cuneiform tablets. Join us to consider how dogs have influenced writers throughout history.

As the “human’s best friend”, dogs have been around for most of the biggest developments in human history, including writing. Dogs witnessed some of the very earliest writings: their paw prints are still preserved on some early cuneiform tablets. Since then, dogs have been mentioned in many different types of writing, from Mayan inscriptions to some of the earliest surviving printed texts from China. Manuscripts from the famous libraries of Timbuktu include texts explaining why the author prefers dogs to other humans, while late medieval European manuscripts depicted authors sitting next to dogs.
To coincide with OCLS’s ‘Big Read’, we will be discussing a very short history of dogs and their writers up to 1500 AD. Attendees will meet a series of colorful characters, from ancient scribes to a fourteenth-century French noble called Gaston who wrote lavishly illustrated tracts about how to look after dogs. (And he should have known: he reportedly owned over 1000.) We will consider why so many different writers, from so many different cultures, have been fascinated by dogs and why dogs continue to inspire us.
