West Oaks - Technology Classroom

Need a trick or treating bag, or a cute tote to carry around town? Learn the basics of pattern reading in this easy and beginner friendly class. Students are encouraged to bring their own material.

  • Class Duration: 3 parts, 2 hours per part
  • Age Requirements: 13-Adult with completed Sewing Lab Waiver, 11-12 with supervising adult and completed Sewing Lab Waiver
  • Recommended Prerequisite: Sewing - Introduction to the Sewing Machine
  • Required Skills: Someone who can sew straight and curved seams while keeping a consistent seam allowance, can thread a standard machine and wind a bobbin, has a basic understanding of different fabric types and has completed several projects.
  • Materials Fee: None
  • Out of District Fee: $10 (includes class and materials fees)

Materials: Students are recommended to bring the following materials to complete the project:

  • 1 yard of exterior fabric, 44" quilting weight
  • 1 yard lining fabric, 44" quilting weight
  • Optional: 3 yards of fusible woven interfacing
  • Coordinating thread

Level Description
Beginner Someone has used a sewing machine before but may need aid on threading the machine and may need additional practice keeping an even seam allowance.
Confident Beginner Someone who can sew straight and curved seams while keeping a consistent seam allowance, can thread a standard machine and wind a bobbin, has a basic understanding of different fabric types and has completed several projects.
Intermediate Someone who is comfortable with working and threading sewing machines, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of fabric types and interfacing, and has experience with using a variety of tools, notions, and presser feet.
Advanced Someone who is comfortable with working and threading both sewing machines and sergers, sewing patterns with markings and notations, has an understanding of both woven and knit fabric types and interfacing, and has experience using a wide variety of tools, notions, and presser feet.
