Learn to stitch using Sashiko hand sewing techniques. This Japanese hand sewing technique uses the simple running stitch to form geometric patterns.
Sashiko hand sewing is a Japanese style hand sewing technique using the simple running stitch. Beautiful designs are created when stitches are applied layer by layer and a pattern emerges. Learn step by step how to mark and hand sew to form the geometric design. Suggested pre-requisite: basic hand sewing skills and how to sew the running stitch is required. This month's featured pattern is Cupid's Arrow. This is a 4-part series.
Duration: 1 hour on Thursdays
Week1: Introduce the pattern
Week 2: Stitch
Week 3: Stitch
Week 4: Complete the pattern
1- 5" Square Fabric or fat quarter (Solid color, quilting cotton or linen-cotton blend fabric)
1 skein Sashiko Thread --may be substituted with Pearl Cotton thread Size 8 or Embroidery Thread (separated into 4 strands) in a contrast color from solid color fabric square
fabric marking pen or marker that is water-soluble or heat-erasable/ Frixion heat erasable marker is recommended
embroidery, crewel, or Sashiko needle
some masking tape or painter's tape (to hold down fabric while tracing)
This is a Virtual Event hosted through Zoom. Please provide your email at registration to participate. You will receive an email with a link to access the Zoom before the event from your event host. Zoom log-in information will be shared no later than one hour before start of event. A computer with access to the internet and speakers or headsets are required. A webcam and microphone are suggested to fully participate. If using a mobile device, Android and iOS users must install the Zoom App (App Store | Play Store). However, please note interactivity may be limited. Additional information will be included in the email from your event host. Recommended Audience: Adults
